Super El Niño intensifies with extreme weather risks
Overview
By early September 2026, the Super El Niño phenomenon has intensified, with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issuing high-certainty alerts that the event will likely persist until February 2027. Experts predict the phenomenon will reach a ‘very strong’ intensity, with peak intensity expected toward the end of 2026. Ocean surface temperatures have already shown significant anomalies, with some deep water regions recording temperatures up to 8°C above the 30-year average.
Regional impacts are escalating. In Ecuador, a red alert is in effect as high waves have destroyed houses and businesses in provinces such as Guayas and Manabí, while up to 2 million hectares of crops face risks from floods or droughts. Honduras is facing a humanitarian crisis due to severe drought in its southern regions and the dry corridor, prompting the government to mobilize over 300 million lempiras for food and medicine. In the Pacific, drought conditions are severe, and smoke from Indonesian forest fires has crossed into Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. In Uruguay, an institutional alert has been declared to manage projected heavy rainfall.
The global outlook remains severe. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the planet is entering a ‘danger zone’ of extreme weather. The WMO notes that the combination of El Niño and global warming could make 2027 the hottest year on record. Furthermore, the World Food Programme warns that the phenomenon could push approximately 50 million people into acute hunger.
