World Breastfeeding Week spurs lactation initiatives across Latin America
During the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week (August 1‑7), a series of events and programs were launched in several Latin American countries to promote, protect and support breastfeeding. In Colombia, the Cundinamarca government inaugurated the nation’s only departmental network of human‑milk banks, linking three hospital banks, eleven collection points and thirteen municipal health secretariats. In the Dominican Republic, ARS Primera hosted a panel on breastfeeding, while Hospiten Santo Domingo highlighted the health benefits of breast milk for mothers and infants.
Universities and health authorities also took part: the University Católica del Maule and the Curicó municipality in Chile organized a second lactation fair; the National University of San Juan in Argentina renovated a “Lactation‑Friendly” space with Ministry of Health backing; and Mexico’s National System for Integral Family Development convened a national meeting on breastfeeding in Toluca. Similar activities were reported in Sweden, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and other nations, all emphasizing the importance of creating supportive environments for mothers and families during the World Breastfeeding Week.
