World Breastfeeding Week 2026 expands regional actions

Entities: World Health Organization · Ministry of Health of La Rioja (Argentina) · World Breastfeeding Week · United Nations Children's Fund · UNICEF

Overview

World Breastfeeding Week 2026 (1‑7 August) continued to drive programmes across the Americas and North Africa under the theme “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”

In Argentina, provincial health authorities added new sites to the rollout. Formosa, Corrientes, Río Negro and Lincoln joined La Ríoja, Catamarca, Chubut and Córdoba in organising workshops, community campaigns and training weeks. The Hospital Municipal Doctor Rubén Omar Miravalle in Lincoln expanded lactation‑room hours, while existing centres in Córdoba and other provinces increased counselling and public‑information sessions.

Mexico’s IMSS reported 126,251 infants under six months were exclusively breastfed in 2025 (51.7 % of its enrollee population) and operates 95 lactarios and 105 dedicated lactation rooms. In Yucatán, three infant‑care centres earned “Espacios Amigos” certification, providing private spaces for milk extraction and storage. The state continued its webinar series and certification efforts.

Brazil’s “Agosto Dourado” campaign kept hospital milk banks and workshops active, and the Dominican Republic’s UNICEF office reiterated the low 19.2 % exclusive‑breastfeeding rate, urging stronger support for mothers.

Tunisia released a 15‑module UNICEF‑Ministry of Health toolkit for health professionals and civil‑society groups, covering early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding, common challenges and safe milk expression for working mothers.

WHO and UNICEF maintain their recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued nursing to two years, noting that scaling up could prevent roughly 400 000 child deaths and 140 000 maternal deaths annually. Exclusive‑breastfeeding rates have risen from about 37 % in 2012 to over 47 % today, still short of the 60 % target for 2030.
