Protests erupt across Argentina on one‑year anniversary of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s house arrest

Supporters gathered outside Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s Buenos Aires residence on the one‑year anniversary of her six‑year prison sentence served under house arrest. La Cámpora, the main Kirchnerist youth organization, organized rallies in the capital and in provinces, and the former president appeared on her balcony in a green jumper and jeans, thanking the crowd and joining in a chant.

Peronist legislators held a press conference in Congress demanding her release, filing a letter to the Supreme Court and the Council of Magistrates. They highlighted that, among 2,513 detainees on house arrest in Argentina, none face the same electronic monitoring conditions.

Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof also denounced the conviction as “arbitrary” and a product of a “long‑standing persecution,” linking it to the current government’s economic policies. He called the ruling “a deeply unjust” political move aimed at intimidating popular leaders.

Fernández de Kirchner was convicted of fraudulent administration of public works contracts in Santa Cruz during her 2007‑2015 presidencies, a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court in June 2025, with a mandated repayment of roughly US$535 million to the state.
