Argentina's 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' flag goes viral and inspires Barcelona mural

After Argentina's dramatic win over England in the World Cup 2026 semifinal, fans at San Martín stadium displayed a white sheet with the slogan “Las Malvinas son argentinas”. The banner, a replica of the one shown by the national team, was handed to the players minutes before kickoff. A video of an elderly couple stopping to stare at the flag went viral on social media, prompting a wave of public support for the message.

The image later travelled beyond sport. Argentine street‑artist Oaky reproduced the photograph on a building façade in Barcelona’s El Poblenou neighbourhood, turning the football tribute into an urban‑art statement about the Falkland Islands conflict of 1982. British officials criticised the display, urging FIFA to sanction the team for political messaging, while the mural sparked debate over memory, nationalism and artistic resistance.
