Argentina's Milei government negotiates with governors and plans David Friedman visit

President Javier Milei’s administration is holding private talks with a group of provincial governors – including Raúl Jalil of Catamarca, Osvaldo Jaldo of Tucumán and Gustavo Sáenz of Salta – to secure legislative backing and avoid direct electoral clashes ahead of the 2027 elections. The talks are framed as agreements on competition and governance rather than formal coalition deals.

At the same time, the government is preparing a visit by David Friedman, son of Nobel‑economist Milton Friedman, to take part in an event organized by the libertarian think‑tank Fundación Faro, led by Agustín Laje and linked to adviser Santiago Caputo. The foundation is currently under investigation by the IGJ over its funding and accounting. The arrangements reflect an internal contest between the Karina Milei faction and the group around Caputo, known as “Las Fuerzas del Cielo,” as the administration seeks to strengthen the La Libertad Avanza brand, pursue legislative reforms such as the proposed Super RIGI and changes to the primary election system, and prepare for Milei’s upcoming trip to the United States for the July 4 celebrations.
