Argentina's Neuquén province gains EU methane rule relief, boosting LNG export plans

The European Union has temporarily suspended penalties tied to new methane‑emission standards for energy companies. The move eases regulatory hurdles for Argentine firms and is seen as a strategic win for Neuquén province, which is preparing to expand liquefied natural gas (LNG) production from the Vaca Muerta formation.

Provincial Governor Rolando Figueroa highlighted the opportunity to start exporting LNG to Europe as early as 2027, citing a 16 % reduction target in emissions intensity over the next two decades and a partnership with YPF to build export infrastructure. The province also aims to supply neighboring markets such as Brazil and Chile.

At the same time, Neuquén officials warn that rapid growth in shale‑gas activity could trigger a demographic surge that outpaces housing, services and municipal capacities. Local leaders are pushing for city‑status upgrades and infrastructure projects to manage the expected population increase while sustaining the energy boom.
