Argentina's PISA Gap Spurs Regional Education Alliance

Argentina's 2022 PISA results showed an average score of 395, 83 points below the OECD mean of 478, placing the country eighth in Latin America and revealing a learning gap equivalent to several school years. The assessment also highlighted internal disparities, with Buenos Aires and Córdoba performing markedly better than the national average.

Across Latin America, eight of ten children reach age ten without basic reading skills, a condition described by the World Bank as a “pobreza de aprendizaje”. In response, Fundación Arcor, Instituto Natura, Fundación SURA and the Instituto de Evidencia Educativa signed a cooperation agreement to promote literacy, strengthen political commitment and improve public policies. The alliance will facilitate exchange among officials and organizations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, covering roughly 70% of the region's students.

The joint effort aims to turn PISA evidence into sustained classroom action and to raise literacy as a central agenda item for governments throughout the region.
