Argentina's PRO Party and Buenos Aires Government Clash Over Milei Alliance and Deep Education Cuts
The Republican Proposal (PRO) party held a meeting in Buenos Aires where Mauricio Macri and his brother Jorge Macri discussed a possible agreement with President Javier Milei ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The debate focused on timing, the degree of autonomy the PRO would retain, and whether to maintain a separate presidential project. Participants included senior officials such as Gabriel Sánchez Zinny, Gustavo Arengo Piragine and Fernando De Andreis. While the meeting did not resolve an alliance, it highlighted ongoing negotiations between the Macri faction and Milei's La Libertad Avanza.
At the same time, the Buenos Aires City Government under Jorge Macri has implemented education budget cuts that are deeper than the national reductions. The city cut salaries, dismissed teachers, closed primary schools and maternal gardens, and slashed programs for disabled students, adult education, scholarships and school meals. Official data show a 13.1% real decline in city education spending in 2025 compared with 2023, with the "Carrera Docente" program falling 51% and scholarships down 36%. These measures intensify the fiscal adjustment in the capital and raise concerns about the impact on public education.
