World Breastfeeding Week 2026 spurs regional initiatives in Latin America
During the World Breastfeeding Week (1‑7 August 2026), health authorities across Latin America launched a series of campaigns, trainings and policy actions to promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued nursing up to two years.
In Argentina, the ministries of health in La Ríoja, Catamarca, Chubut, Corrientes and Córdoba organized provincial agendas, workshops, surveys and certification programs for hospitals and “friendly lactation” spaces. The La Ríoja Ministry announced a month‑long schedule of community events, while the Catamarca centre reported a steady rise in mothers assisted, reaching 2 855 in the first half of 2026. Chubut’s “Chubut Crece” plan scheduled a provincial training week for health staff, and Córdoba’s Hospital Regional Pasteur hosted daily counseling and public‑information sessions.
Mexico’s Yucatán government coordinated courses, webinars and certification of child‑care centres as lactation‑friendly environments. The Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) reported that 126 251 infants under six months received exclusive breastfeeding in 2025, a 51.7 % rate that exceeds the World Health Organization’s 48 % global average. IMSS highlighted its network of 95 lactaries and 105 lactation rooms to support working mothers.
In the Dominican Republic, UNICEF warned that only 19.2 % of infants receive exclusive breastfeeding, far below the 50 % target, and called for stronger policy and service support.
The World Health Organization and UNICEF continue to recommend exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued nursing up to two years, emphasizing its role in child immunity, development and maternal health.
