World Breastfeeding Week 2026 runs from 1 to 7 August under the theme “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works”. Health ministries, local governments and NGOs across several countries have launched workshops, talks, training sessions and community‑based support to promote, protect and assist breastfeeding.

In Argentina, the provinces of Formosa, La Rioja, Chubut, Catamarca and the city of Lincoln have organised province‑wide agendas, training for health staff and public lactation rooms. Formosa’s programme is promoted under the slogan “Lactancia materna: un inicio sostenible en cualquier circunstancia. Fortalezcamos las acciones que funcionan”. Catamarca’s lactation centre reported assisting 2,855 mothers and extracting 144,571 L of human milk in the first half of 2026.

Mexico’s Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Veracruz Norte highlighted that exclusive breastfeeding supplies all nutrients for the first six months and reduces infant mortality in the first year. The Chihuahua State Human Rights Commission (CEDH) has opened two workplace lactation rooms.

UNICEF data show that only 19.2 % of infants in the Dominican Republic receive exclusive breastfeeding, well below the 50 % global target. UNICEF’s chief in Nigeria reported a 29 % exclusive‑breastfeeding rate there. UNICEF and the WHO continue to call for stronger health‑system support, workplace protections and community engagement to raise these rates.

Zimbabwe’s Nutrition Action Zimbabwe (NAZ) is scaling community‑led interventions in eight districts to improve exclusive breastfeeding and reduce child malnutrition.
