Argentina's Vaca Muerta faces shortage of skilled technicians
Rapid expansion of the Vaca Muerta shale development is creating a sizable labor gap in Argentina's energy sector. Industry estimates forecast a need for 30 000‑43 000 additional workers by 2030, especially in drilling, well completion and field operations. Domestic training pipelines are insufficient – roughly 6 000 engineers graduate each year against a demand of about 15 000.
Companies are shifting recruitment toward candidates with hands‑on experience and are urging stronger collaboration between the private sector, universities and government to expand technical education, apprenticeships and scholarships. Strengthening these programmes is described as essential for sustaining the region’s growth and for delivering a more equitable, long‑term economic benefit.
The shortage highlights broader challenges of matching workforce skills to the fast‑growing energy market and underscores the need for coordinated policy and investment to bridge the gap.
