Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale basin seeks NGL infrastructure as AI data centers drive new gas demand
Argentina’s Vaca Muerta basin is poised for a historic surge in hydrocarbon production, but the rich gas it yields contains large volumes of natural‑gas liquids (NGLs) such as ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline. Separating these components requires new fractionation plants, poly‑ducts and pipelines; without them, the higher‑value liquids remain trapped in the gas stream, wasting potential revenue. Current market prices for propane and butane have risen dramatically, making NGL processing a critical economic lever for the country's export strategy.
At the same time, the rapid expansion of artificial‑intelligence data centers is creating a fresh demand for continuous, high‑volume gas supply. Experts note that AI‑driven facilities consume terabytes of energy and could require up to millions of cubic metres of gas daily. Flexible engines, as opposed to large turbines, are being promoted for their quicker start‑up and lower redundancy, positioning Vaca Muerta’s gas output as a key feedstock for these power‑intensive operations and opening a new market avenue beyond traditional petrochemical uses.
