Argentina banks refinance over 500,000 irregular loans
Argentine banks have refinanced more than 500,000 irregular loans, according to data reported to the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA). Estimates from the consultancy EcoGo indicate that these restructurings benefited approximately 386,000 people in July, representing 6.5% of the total delinquent debtors in the system when including the fintech sector.
In parallel, non-banking financial providers have initiated contact with roughly 2 million clients to renegotiate debts. This movement occurs amid a significant political and institutional debate in the Chamber of Deputies regarding household indebtedness. While opposition lawmakers are seeking to unify legislative initiatives to provide debt relief for families and businesses, banking representatives, including the Association of Argentine Banks (ADEBA), argue against state intervention, claiming that private renegotiations demonstrate the system functions effectively without government interference.
Studies show that the proportion of credit holders in arrears reached 26.6% in July. Meanwhile, regional entities like Banco Rioja are evaluating measures to lower interest rates and improve refinancing conditions for credit card balances to assist families facing financial difficulties.
