Argentine business leaders debate impact of Milei's economic policies

Business leaders in Argentina are expressing divergent views regarding the economic direction of President Javier Milei's administration and its impact on the private sector.

Claudio Drescher, head of the Argentine Clothing Industrial Chamber, criticized the government's lack of industrial policy, describing the current trajectory as “suicidal” and “anti-industrial.” Drescher noted that the textile sector is facing a critical situation driven by a collapse in consumer purchasing power and competition from low-cost imports, particularly from China. He emphasized that the decline in the middle class's ability to spend is affecting both domestic and foreign brands.

In contrast, Mario Grinman, president of the Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Services, defended the current economic transformation. Addressing recent controversy regarding business closures, Grinman stated that such closures reflect the current reality and are part of a broader economic shift. While acknowledging concern within certain sectors, he argued that enduring “collateral damage” may be necessary to transform Argentina into a “normal country,” suggesting that the economic landscape is currently heterogeneous, with some sectors growing while others struggle.
