Argentine cities propose new animal welfare and identification laws

In Goya, the City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance to create a Registry of Animal Abusers. This database will identify individuals sanctioned for animal cruelty or abuse under municipal ordinances or national law. Offenders will remain in the registry for two years, or three years in cases of recidivism. The municipality will establish a convenio with the Judiciary of Corrientes to automatically incorporate relevant sentences. The registry will be accessible to animal protection entities and citizens to facilitate responsible adoptions.

In Buenos Aires, the city government is promoting a bill in the Legislature to establish new standards for the identification and protection of dogs and cats. The proposal includes the creation of a Unique Digital Identification System and a Digital Health Record to centralize vaccination, reproductive, and neutering history. Additionally, the project seeks to allow pets to travel on public buses in carriers and proposes the establishment of a pet cemetery and crematorium in Chacarita.
