Argentine football faces internal friction and judicial scrutiny

Tensions are rising within Argentine football involving the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and major clubs. Renzo Pantich has described the relationship between the AFA, led by Claudio Tapia, and River Plate, led by Stefano Di Carlo, as “totally broken” following organizational issues during Lionel Messi’s farewell ceremony at the Monumental stadium. There are discussions regarding the national team potentially moving its venue from the Monumental to the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona in La Plata.

Simultaneously, Ariel Vallejo, owner of Sur Finanzas and an individual linked to Claudio Tapia, is facing judicial scrutiny. A federal judge in Lomas de Zamora, Juan Tomás Rodríguez Ponte, ordered the surrender of 24 vehicles to the Supreme Court, including a Ferrari and three motorcycles. In response to the court order and the freezing of his company's accounts, Vallejo published messages on social media comparing his situation to the political proscription of Juan Domingo Perón, claiming that his financial growth and influence in football have drawn unwanted judicial attention.
