Argentina: High levels of household debt and financial instability

Recent surveys from consultancies Brain Network and Zentrix reveal a significant financial crisis among Argentine households. Approximately 82% of the population reports difficulty covering monthly expenses, with many unable to meet their obligations before the end of the month. A Zentrix report indicates that 65.3% of Argentines run out of money by the 20th, a figure that rises to over 83% among the poorest sectors.

To manage these deficits, families are increasingly relying on credit. About 79% of respondents hold credit cards, and 40% of those facing payment difficulties use them to cover basic daily costs. Other common strategies include reducing consumption (31%), borrowing from friends or family (23%), and taking out personal loans (16%).

The population is categorized into three financial stability groups: "Malabaristas" (57%), who manage through constant budget adjustments; "Desbordados" (21%), who face recurring delays and insufficient income; and those who remain "Al día" (22%) with relative stability. The data highlights that for many, credit is no longer a tool for consumption but a necessary extension of income to ensure subsistence.
