Argentine industry warns of job losses over air conditioner production changes

Industrial leaders and representatives in Argentina are expressing deep concern over a proposal to modify the production processes for air conditioning units. The initiative, submitted by the Association of Argentine Electronic Terminal Factories (AFARTE) and the Fueguian Industrial Union to the National Secretariat of Productive Coordination, seeks to substantially reduce the local value added in manufacturing.

Mónica Acosta, a representative of the Renacer Cooperative and legislator, warned that such changes to production standards under Law 19.640 could lead to a massive loss of direct jobs in Río Grande and Ushuaia. She noted that the impact would extend beyond large manufacturing plants to affect local cooperatives and commerce. Acosta emphasized the need for a unified stance between provincial government, unions, and political forces to protect local industry and territorial sovereignty.
