Argentine media groups warn of declining press freedom

Argentine media organizations and journalists have raised alarms regarding the deterioration of press freedom in the country. During meetings at the Chamber of Deputies and the annual assembly of the Asociación de Entidades Periodísticas Argentinas (ADEPA) in San Miguel de Tucumán, representatives warned of increasing aggression, restrictions on information access, and harassment directed at journalists.

ADEPA reported a systematic pattern of insults and stigmatization from President Javier Milei. The organization noted that between August 17 and August 23, the President reposted 335 messages against the press on X, alongside various public derogatory remarks. The report highlights that such rhetoric from high-ranking officials can damage democratic debate and create a contagion effect in society.

Other organizations, including the Foro de Periodismo Argentino (FOPEA) and the Asociación de Periodistas de la República Argentina (APeRA), expressed concern over the fragility of freedom of expression. They cited a combination of political attacks, industry crises, and the increasing precariousness of journalistic working conditions as major threats to the profession.
