Press freedom concerns in Argentina

Concerns regarding the state of press freedom in Argentina have intensified following legal disputes and political rhetoric.

In early September, a court in San Isidro overturned restrictions placed on five journalists by officials from the Argentine Football Association (AFA). The revoked measures had prevented the reporters from contacting AFA president Claudio Tapia or his treasurer, Pablo Toviggino, and restricted their ability to disseminate certain information. The Association of Argentine Journalistic Entities (ADEPA) described the ruling as a “valuable precedent” for freedom of expression, warning that using criminal complaints to target investigative journalism can function as “prior censorship.”

Following this, media organizations including ADEPA, the Foro de Periodismo Argentino (FOPEA), and the Asociación de Periodistas de la República Argentina (APeRA) raised broader alarms about the deterioration of journalistic conditions. These groups reported increasing harassment, restrictions on information access, and political aggression. Specifically, ADEPA highlighted a pattern of stigmatization from President Javier Milei, noting that the President reposted hundreds of messages against the press on social media in a single week in August. Organizations warned that such rhetoric, combined with industry crises and precarious working conditions, threatens democratic debate.
