Argentine municipalities prepare for El Niño flooding risks

Municipalities in Argentina are implementing preventive measures to mitigate the risks posed by the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to bring intense rainfall and rising river levels.

In Villa Ocampo, Mayor Cristian Marega is coordinating with local producers to establish an animal evacuation protocol. Due to limited high-ground surface area for livestock, the municipality is defining specific routes and sectors to prevent disorganized movement during a potential rise of the Paraná River. Local authorities are also conducting hydraulic works, including the cleaning and deepening of channels.

In Laguna Paiva, Mayor Elvio Cotterli identified the town as a high-risk area for water-related issues. Although the town is located away from the Paraná and Salado rivers, saturated soil levels from rising river basins reduce the ground's ability to absorb rainfall. To mitigate this, the municipality is focusing on the maintenance and cleaning of the local storm drainage system to ensure rapid water displacement during heavy precipitation.
