Argentina faces rising household debt and legislative debate

Argentina is facing a significant surge in household debt delinquency. According to a study by the Centro de Economía Política Argentina (CEPA), non-financial sector delinquency reached 33.9% in July, a sharp increase from 7.3% in November 2024. Delinquency within the formal financial system rose to 13.0% during the same period, compared to 2.5% in late 2024. This trend is attributed to declining incomes, with registered wages falling 14.3% between November 2023 and June 2026.

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies is currently debating legislative responses to this crisis. The opposition is pushing for a unified report that includes measures such as interest rate caps for credit cards and digital wallets, debt refinancing plans, and waivers on punitive interest. They also seek increased oversight of banks and fintech companies.

In contrast, the ruling party, La Libertad Avanza, is working on its own proposal. Their approach focuses on financial education, increased transparency, user warnings, and mandatory double authentication for loans, rather than direct intervention in interest rates. The government maintains that regulating rates could restrict access to credit.
