Argentine prison guards accused of smuggling contraband

Two prison guards in La Rioja, Argentina, have been accused of smuggling drugs and prohibited items into the Provincial Penitentiary Service (SPP). Following an investigation by the Federal Police and an order from Judge Daniel Piedrabuena, one agent—who had 12 years of service and was in charge of entry controls—was detained. Authorities suspect the official used his position to facilitate the entry and distribution of contraband brought by relatives.

During searches of inmate pavilions, investigators seized an unauthorized mobile phone belonging to an inmate and the personal phone of the investigated employee. A second prison official has also been charged in a separate, prior case involving the possession and alleged distribution of prohibited substances within the facility. Both accused individuals face up to five years in prison, with potential sentence increases due to their status as public officials.
