Argentine prison contraband and drug trafficking
Overview
Authorities in Argentina have investigated multiple instances of narcotics trafficking and contraband smuggling within the prison system.
In the Piñero Penitentiary Unit No. 11, inmates Ezequiel Romero and Axel Herrera were charged with operating a drug trafficking ring from inside the facility between April and September 2026. The investigation alleges the group used external accomplices to smuggle narcotics into the prison, including through pregnant women during visits, and managed drug debts through threats against inmates' families.
In a separate case in La Rioja, two prison guards were accused of facilitating the entry and distribution of prohibited items and drugs into the Provincial Penitentiary Service. One official, who was responsible for entry controls, was detained following an investigation by the Federal Police. Authorities seized mobile phones during searches of inmate pavilions as part of the probe.
