Argentine provinces prepare to decouple 2027 elections

Several Argentine provinces are moving toward decoupling their 2027 elections from the national electoral cycle.

In Corrientes, Governor Juan Pablo Valdés indicated that the province will likely hold separate elections, with a formal date to be announced later. Valdés also expressed support for eliminating the PASO (Simultaneous and Mandatory Primaries), suggesting political parties should reach agreements on candidates instead. Regarding the national economy, he noted hopes that the Ministry of Economy’s projections for a slight recovery during Javier Milei’s term will materialize.

In Salta, provincial officials have confirmed that the 2027 elections will be decoupled. Deputy Socorro Villamayor cited technical reasons for the split, noting that provincial elections utilize electronic ballots while national elections use a single paper ballot system. Governor Gustavo Sáenz is reportedly considering dates in mid-May 2027. While the ruling party maintains the move is for transparency and efficiency, opposition members have questioned whether the decision is a political strategy to protect local territory.
