Argentine researchers monitor sturgeon and hake populations
Scientists from CONICET and the National University of La Plata (UNLP) have renewed a call for fishermen to donate sturgeon captured in the Río de la Plata. Researchers from the Institute of Limnology of La Plata (ILPLA) are studying this exotic species to understand its presence in the ecosystem. Previous studies on recovered specimens revealed signs of malnutrition and poor health, suggesting the fish have struggled to adapt to the local environment and form stable populations.
In a separate biological study, researchers from the Almirante Storni Center (CIMAS) have launched the 2026 Demersal Resources campaign in the San Matías Gulf. The mission aims to assess the current state of the hake population following a significant biomass collapse in 2022. While there have been signs of recovery in 2024, the ongoing research on the vessel Mar Argentino will determine if these trends are sustained and how the population has changed since the last major measurement.
