San Matías Gulf marine research campaign
Overview
Researchers from the Almirante Storni Center (CIMAS) have launched the 2026 Demersal Resources campaign in the San Matías Gulf. Utilizing the vessel Mar Argentino, the 12 day expedition aims to monitor hake and other commercial species to assist in fishery resource management.
This initiative follows previous studies conducted in 2022 and 2024. While the 2024 campaign indicated a recovery in hake biomass to an estimated 25,706 tons, levels remained at approximately half of historical reference values. The current mission seeks to determine if these recovery trends are sustained and how populations have changed since the last major measurement.
Río Negro Governor Alberto Weretilneck noted that the research is a central part of provincial environmental protection policies, intended to ensure economic growth remains compatible with marine conservation.
