Argentine Senate debates federal tax redistribution reform

The Senate's Federal Tax Coparticipation Commission has launched a formal discussion to rethink the country's tax scheme and resource distribution. The initiative, titled “Rethinking coparticipation, from federal design to the reality of the provinces,” aims to address long-standing regional asymmetries that have hindered provincial development for decades.

Senator Eduardo Vischi, president of the commission, characterized the issue as a “pending debt” that has been delayed for 30 years. He emphasized that the debate must move beyond accounting calculations toward achieving real autonomy and equitable development for the provinces. Senator Flavia Royón added that provinces have increasingly acted as buffers against the retreat of national state functions, making a distributive review urgent.

Representing the province of Salta, Economy and Public Services Minister Roberto Dib Ashur is presenting technical proposals to correct historical imbalances that disproportionately affect northern Argentine provinces. The discussions occur amid ongoing fiscal tensions between provincial governors and the national executive regarding the predictability and flow of shared tax revenues.
