ARIA bans AI-generated songs from Australian music charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has implemented new eligibility rules that bar songs entirely or largely generated by artificial intelligence from appearing on the country's official music charts. The policy, which takes effect on August 28, requires recordings to be ‘substantially human made’ to qualify.

Under the new framework, AI is permitted as a supporting tool for tasks such as mastering, drum machines, or Auto-Tune. However, humans must remain responsible for the primary creative elements, including songwriting, lead vocals, and instrumentation. If a track is found to be generated wholesale by AI services, it will be excluded from the charts and may be disqualified from ARIA Awards.

ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd stated that the move aims to protect human creativity and ensure the charts remain a transparent measurement of music consumption. She noted that while AI tools are becoming part of artist workflows, rewarding unlicensed AI output would undercut the foundation of the recorded music industry.
