ARIA regulations on AI-generated music

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has introduced new eligibility rules to prevent songs created entirely or predominantly by artificial intelligence from appearing on official music charts. The policy, effective August 28, requires recordings to be “substantially human made” to qualify.

The decision follows controversy involving an AI-generated cover of Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’ by DJ Josh Fawaz, which reached the top of the ARIA dance singles chart. Under the new framework, AI is permitted as a supporting tool for tasks such as mastering, drum machines, or Auto-Tune, but humans must remain responsible for primary creative elements like songwriting, lead vocals, and instrumentation.

To ensure transparency, record companies must use labels to indicate if content is “AI Generated” or “AI Assisted.” Additionally, songs that have used AI in their production will be excluded from ARIA Awards. ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd stated the move aims to “promote the human nature of artistic creation” and noted that rewarding unlicensed AI output would undermine the recorded music industry.
