Arica, Chile draws winter tourists with year‑round spring climate

The Arica and Parinacota region in northern Chile, dubbed “the City of Eternal Spring,” is experiencing a notable rise in visitors during the Southern Hemisphere winter. Its mild temperatures and clear skies allow tourists to enjoy beaches, outdoor activities and cultural sites year‑round. Regional tourism director Luis Alberto Duarte says, “Arica is known as the city of eternal spring, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies all year. This allows enjoying beaches and outdoor activities, visits to the Codpa valley and excursions to the pre‑cordillera and altiplano even in winter.”

Key attractions highlighted include the 7,000‑year‑old Chinchorro mummies – among the world’s oldest human remains – the high‑altitude Lake Chungará, the twin volcanoes Parinacota and Pomerape (the Payachatas), the Salar de Surire, Azapa geoglyphs, the tiny Picaflor bird, and the historic town of Parinacota. Surf enthusiasts are drawn to “El Gringo,” a powerful wave off Isla Alacrán, while the Cuevas de Anzota offer geological intrigue. Hotel manager Peter Müffeler Vergara adds, “Arica combines beaches, historic heritage, millennial culture, gastronomy, adventure sport and nature in one destination.” The region’s strategic position near Peru and Bolivia further enhances its multicultural appeal.
