Arizona State hires Dave Hakstol as men’s hockey head coach
Arizona State University has hired Dave Hakstol as the new head coach of its men’s hockey program. Hakstol, 58, most recently served as an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche and previously held head coaching positions in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers and Seattle Kraken. He is also well known for his 11-year tenure at the University of North Dakota, where he led the team to seven NCAA Frozen Four appearances.
Hakstol’s appointment follows the departure of former head coach Greg Powers, who was placed on leave on September 30. The leadership change comes amid an investigation into the August 20 collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout in near 90-degree weather. Mayich remains in critical condition. Following the incident, seven players requested Powers be placed on leave, alleging he failed to ensure proper hydration and care for the athlete.
With Hakstol’s move to the NCAA, Brett McLean is expected to replace him on the Colorado Avalanche coaching staff.
