ASU hockey coach replaced amid Mayich injury investigation
Overview
On August 20, 21-year-old defenseman Matthew Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, suffering cardiac arrest and exertional heatstroke. Mayich, a St. Louis Blues prospect, remains on life support with brain trauma. His attorney, Rob Carey, has described the conditioning session as “onerous” and “grueling,” noting it took place in extreme heat reaching approximately 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit) with minimal rest. Carey stated that Mayich’s condition is irreversible, noting his body has “fundamentally ceased to function.”
Following an anonymous 26-page letter from seven players alleging that head coach Greg Powers denied Mayich adequate hydration and medical attention, ASU placed Powers on paid administrative leave. On September 30, Powers reached a mutual agreement with the university to end his tenure. On October 15, ASU hired Dave Hakstol, 58, as the new head coach. Hakstol most recently served as an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche and previously held NHL head coaching positions with the Philadelphia Flyers and Seattle Kraken.
An initial university review found the hockey staff had not submitted a training plan to university strength and conditioning coaches prior to the session, which involved outside consultant Timothy Ziesel. ASU has appointed former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales to conduct an independent review, expected to be completed by early December. The Arizona State police department is also investigating. Mayich’s parents have criticized the coaching change, characterizing it as a “negotiated agreement rather than accountability,” and are calling for the investigation to expand its scope to all individuals involved in approving the workout.
