Matthew Mayich hospitalized after Arizona State workout collapse
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old defenseman and St. Louis Blues prospect, remains hospitalized following a medical emergency during an outdoor workout at Arizona State University on August 20. The incident occurred at the university’s track facilities in Tempe amid extreme heat warnings for the Phoenix area.
Emergency responders initially treated the incident as a heat-related illness. However, some reports indicate Mayich may have suffered a cardiac event and was placed in a coma. Arizona State University has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the workout, though officials have not confirmed if the session was officially sanctioned by the hockey program.
Mayich, a native of Ontario, Canada, recently transferred to ASU from Clarkson University. The St. Louis Blues, the NHL team that drafted him in 2023, issued a statement expressing support for Mayich and his family. The Ontario Hockey League and other hockey organizations have also offered prayers for his recovery.
