Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich in critical condition after workout collapse

Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old Arizona State University hockey player and St. Louis Blues draft pick, remains hospitalized following a collapse during an outdoor workout on August 20. His attorney, Rob Carey, stated that the player's condition is irreversible and that describing his state as a coma is no longer accurate, as his body has fundamentally ceased to function.

Carey has criticized the nature of the workout, describing it as “onerous” and “grueling,” noting it took place on a hot desert day with minimal rest and only one water break. The attorney is calling for an independent investigation into the incident, suggesting the conditions may have put student-athletes in jeopardy.

Arizona State University has announced it will conduct a review of the incident. Athletic director Graham Rossini stated the university is “reviewing the facts and understanding the scenario,” while noting that coaches and trainers were present during the session.
