Arizona State hockey players demand coach leave after teammate's collapse
Seven Arizona State University hockey players have submitted an anonymous 26-page letter to President Michael Crow, requesting that head coach Greg Powers and his staff be placed on administrative leave. The players are disputing the findings of the university’s initial internal review regarding an August 20 outdoor workout that left defenseman Matthew Mayich in a coma and on life support.
The players allege that the workout, which lasted over 75 minutes, lacked proper hydration and medical oversight. Specifically, they claim Mayich did not receive adequate water and showed signs of distress well before his collapse. They also accuse Coach Powers of downplaying the severity of Mayich’s condition, allegedly describing it as ‘just a little heat stroke.’
In response to the incident, Arizona’s House and Senate education chairs have called on the Arizona Board of Regents to appoint an independent investigator to examine the circumstances. The parents of Matthew Mayich have also joined the call for the coaching staff to be removed pending an outside investigation. Mayich, a 21-year-old St. Louis Blues prospect, is reportedly unlikely to recover from the exertional heat stroke, which caused significant brain trauma.
