Arizona State in talks with Dave Hakstol for hockey coach role

Arizona State University is in talks with former NHL head coach Dave Hakstol to serve as the interim head coach for its men's ice hockey team. Hakstol, currently an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche, is expected to replace Greg Powers, who was placed on administrative leave following a tragic incident during a training session.

On August 20, 21-year-old player Matthew Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout led by Tim Ziesel. Reports indicate Mayich suffered from external heat stroke that reduced oxygen flow to his brain. According to the player's family attorney, there is no possibility of significant recovery, and Mayich remains on life support. An investigation is underway to determine if players were denied access to water during the session. The university has requested former Arizona State Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales to lead an independent review of the incident, with a target completion date in early December.
