Arizona State names Dave Hakstol as hockey coach amid injury investigation

Arizona State University has named former NHL coach Dave Hakstol as the new head coach of its hockey program. Hakstol replaces Greg Powers, who reached a mutual agreement with the university to end his tenure following a controversial preseason.

The coaching change follows a tragic incident in August involving defenseman Matthew Mayich, who collapsed during a military-style outdoor workout in approximately 90-degree heat. Mayich suffered heat stroke and oxygen loss to the brain, and remains on life support.

In response to the coaching transition, Mayich’s parents issued a statement expressing that the departure of Powers does not resolve their concerns. They characterized the move as a “negotiated agreement rather than accountability” and are calling for the ongoing investigation led by Justice Bales to expand its scope. The family is demanding that the inquiry examine all individuals involved in approving the August workout and that all findings be made public.
