Arizona State University hockey player on life support after workout collapse
Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old Canadian hockey player for Arizona State University, remains on life support following a collapse during an outdoor workout at Sun Angel Stadium on August 20. The incident occurred during an intense session in the Arizona heat led by Timothy Ziesel, a former Green Beret.
Mayich’s family attorney, Robert Carey, has alleged that the university ignored its own safety policies. Carey claims the player was subjected to an approximately 80-minute session without adequate water or rest and has requested that the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office open a criminal investigation. The attorney further alleged that Ziesel was not properly certified or vetted for the role.
An internal review by the ASU athletic department reportedly did not assign responsibility for the collapse, though it did reveal that hockey coaches had not reviewed the workout plan provided by the trainer. ASU head coach Greg Powers has declined to answer specific questions regarding the circumstances of the incident during recent press conferences.
