Arizona State University launches content creation degree
Arizona State University has launched a bachelor’s degree in content creation through its Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program is designed to address the growing creator economy by teaching professional skills such as podcasting, studio production, audience development, personal branding, and managing business relationships with sponsors.
While the degree aims to professionalize the field, it has sparked debate regarding the financial return on investment. Critics question the value of high tuition costs—which can exceed $60,000 annually for out-of-state students—given the volatile and highly competitive nature of social media income. Experts note that while the US creator economy is projected to generate over $20 billion this year, much of that revenue goes to platforms rather than individual creators.
Arizona State is not alone in this trend; institutions like Syracuse, Quinnipiac, and Colorado State University offer related minors, while St. Bonaventure University has already established a content creation major. Educators emphasize that the curriculum focuses on transferable marketing and communication skills that extend beyond social media platforms.
