Armed gang attack in Zamfara, Nigeria kills 17 farmers

On Friday, gunmen on motorcycles attacked the remote farming community of Goran Namaye in Zamfara State, north‑western Nigeria. Seventeen farmers were shot dead and five others wounded, three of them seriously.

The assault is linked to bandit groups that extort ransom for permission to farm the area. A week earlier, 39 elderly villagers were abducted while en route to a bandit camp for peace talks. The International Monetary Fund warned that such bandit activity could reduce tax and export revenues and worsen poverty and food insecurity across Nigeria.
