Nigeria bandit and militant violence surge

Overview

Violence across north‑west and central Nigeria intensified through early July 2026, blending deadly farmer‑herder clashes, raids on institutions and expanding bandit attacks on security forces. After the July 1 ethnic clash in Rafi LGA, Niger State, and the July 2 ambush that killed two soldiers, bandits stormed villages, abducted civilians and looted livestock. Coordinated raids on July 5 hit more than 30 villages in Sokoto State, prompting mass displacement that now approaches 800,000 and renewed calls for permanent outposts and stronger military‑local coordination. By mid‑July, bandits in Zamfara escalated kidnapping operations, abducting over 40 people from eleven villages between 19‑21 July; the victims remain held in the gang’s hide‑out. A separate assault on Zamfara villages on 23 July left more than 20 dead, underscoring the continued lethality of bandit raids. In the southwest, the Ansaru breakaway of Boko Haram seized 39 schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo state on 15 May; a joint operation rescued the hostages on 10 July, though one teacher died during the abduction and two were killed while captive. Officials have again requested additional security forces and tighter surveillance of forested corridors used by armed groups. Late July saw two further high‑casualty attacks. On 23 July, armed bandits entered farms in the Sauna district of Talata Mafara LGA, Zamfara State, shooting at least 20–24 farmers and seizing livestock; security forces later killed three suspected bandits in Kwara State. Four days later, in the early hours of 27 July, a gun‑men group stormed Naridon village in Kaduna State, killing more than 30 civilians, including women and children; community leaders blamed cattle‑herders, linking the raid to the long‑standing farmer‑herder conflict. These incidents raise the death toll beyond 100 in July and reinforce calls for permanent security outposts, accelerated patrols, and greater coordination between the military and local authorities.
