Armenia local elections held in 21 communities

Local self-government elections are being conducted across 21 Armenian communities on October 25. The elections follow two different systems: 19 communities are using a proportional system, while two communities, Violetovo and Shamiram, are utilizing a majoritarian system.

The Central Electoral Commission reported that 1,637 candidates have been nominated, including 553 women. A total of 13 political parties and 4 alliances are participating in the proportional contests. The ‘Civil Contract’ party is notable for having candidates running in all 21 communities, with several current mayors leading their lists.

Observers and political figures have raised concerns regarding the electoral process. Some candidates, such as Artur Astoyan of the ‘Living Country’ party, reported being detained for questioning, which they characterized as an attempt to intimidate opposition forces. Additionally, reports emerged of administrative interference in certain regions, including instances of local officials allegedly attempting to influence voters during the process.
