Massive wildfires raging in the Gironde department of southwest France and central Spain have triggered one of the largest evacuation operations in recent European history. More than 220,000 residents have been moved from their homes in the Bordeaux area, while roughly 100,000 people have been evacuated from affected zones in Spain, including the Madrid‑Ávila‑Toledo corridor and the Valencian coast. The French fire has consumed tens of thousands of hectares – estimates range from 32,700 ha in Gironde to over 40,000 ha overall – and the blaze sits only about 15 km from the Bordeaux metropolitan perimeter. In Spain, about 77,000 ha have burned across Madrid, Ávila and Toledo, with additional fires in Castellón and Valencia.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the situation as “very unfavorable” and President Emmanuel Macron ordered the army and civil‑defence resources to protect strategic sites. The French government declared a national emergency and mobilised 1,500 soldiers, 1,200 military firefighters and dozens of aerial assets. Spain also declared a national emergency, with the military unit UME coordinating the response. International assistance arrived from Portugal, Italy, Greece and Turkey, while the EU pledged four RESCUEU aircraft. A new heat wave forecast with temperatures up to 40 °C threatens to worsen the fires. Injuries have been reported among firefighters – at least 84 injured and two fatalities in France – and the blazes have caused widespread smoke and air‑quality concerns across the region.
