Armenia records 129 political parties as one new party's registration is denied

According to the Justice Ministry, Armenia had 129 parties officially registered as of 9 June 2026, serving a population of about 2.9 million and roughly 2.3 million eligible voters. This translates to roughly one party for every 18‑20 thousand residents, a figure that appears high by international standards. Analysts note that many of these parties are inactive, often formed around a single individual, lack a clear ideological platform, and disappear after an election cycle.

In a separate case, the ministry rejected the registration of Arthur Ghazinian’s party, “Mek Hayastan,” citing non‑compliance with Article 11 of the Parties Law, which requires a sufficient number of founding members and the adoption of essential internal decisions at a founding assembly. Ghazinian, a former parliamentarian, stated that the party had been inactive for years and had never sought electoral participation.
