Armenia Re‑elects Pashinyan, Reinforcing Shift Toward EU and Away From Russia

On 7 June, Armenia held a parliamentary election that gave incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party 49.81 % of the vote, securing a clear majority. Voters endorsed the government’s policy of reducing strategic reliance on Moscow, pursuing peace with Azerbaijan, and deepening engagement with the European Union.

Russia warned of serious repercussions and intensified economic pressure, including trade bans on Armenian cognac, framing the election as a test of its influence.

The EU is poised to support the new mandate through existing instruments such as the €270 million Resilience and Growth Plan, visa‑liberalisation talks, and the Global Gateway investment strategy targeting up to €2.5 billion for Armenia’s digital, energy and transport sectors.

The United States has also outlined a preliminary Armenia‑Azerbaijan peace framework, further highlighting the election’s regional significance.
