Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called Russian President Vladimir Putin in the first direct contact since the June parliamentary elections to raise the issue of Russian restrictions on Armenian exports. Russia has temporarily banned a broad range of Armenian products, including fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish, alcohol, dairy and mineral water, which Pashinyan says breach bilateral agreements and the rules of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Putin reiterated that Armenia should hold a national referendum on whether to join the European Union or remain in the EAEU. Pashinyan emphasized that such a referendum would only be practicable after Armenia formally applies for EU membership. The Russian side framed the restrictions as "normal work," while Russian officials suggested they could be replaced by Azerbaijani goods.

Armenia‑Russia trade turnover fell 20.5 % in the first five months of 2026, and Russia accounts for roughly a third of Armenia’s foreign trade. The European Union has responded with a package of about €52 million in aid and tariff reductions on around 80 % of Armenian goods to mitigate the impact of the bans.
