Following the June 2026 parliamentary elections, the Civil Contract Party secured 49.74 % of the vote and 64 seats, giving it a majority in the new National Assembly. The Assembly convened for its first session on 2 August 2026.

Under Article 158 of the Armenian Constitution, the incumbent government was required to resign on the day the new parliament met. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan submitted a resignation letter to President Vahagn Khachaturyan, who signed a decree accepting the resignation. The constitution also mandates that the president appoint the candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority as prime minister. Accordingly, President Khachaturyan re‑appointed Pashinyan as prime minister under Article 149.

The outgoing cabinet will continue to function in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed, as stipulated by the constitution.
