Armenia's Pashinyan Party Misses Majority in Parliamentary Election

Armenia held parliamentary elections on Sunday. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's ruling Civil Contract party received 49.81% of the vote (727,160 votes), falling short of the 50% threshold required for a constitutional super‑majority.

Opposition forces entered the 101‑seat National Assembly: the Strong Armenia bloc secured 23.29% (340,062 votes), the Armenia bloc earned 9.94% (145,097 votes) and Prosperous Armenia garnered around 4%, just below the entry threshold after a last‑minute adjustment. Because the ruling party did not obtain a majority, it cannot unilaterally enact constitutional changes or appoint key officials without coalition support.

The result reflects ongoing political tension after Pashinyan survived a severe defeat in the 2020 Nagorno‑Karabakh war and shifted Armenia's orientation from pro‑Russian toward a more pro‑Western stance. Large protests, involving hundreds of thousands of Armenians, have been reported, underscoring domestic discontent with the election outcome and the government's handling of opposition figures.
