Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wins election and pledges peace with Azerbaijan

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan secured a parliamentary majority in Armenia’s snap election, with his Civil Contract party receiving about 49.8 % of the vote. The result gives him a mandate to continue his policy of distancing Armenia from Russia and pursuing peace negotiations with Azerbaijan, as well as normalising relations with Turkey and strengthening ties with the United States and the European Union.

Analysts say the vote reflects public fatigue with nationalist rhetoric and a desire for stability after the loss of Nagorno‑Karabakh. However, Pashinyan’s victory does not grant the two‑thirds majority needed to trigger a constitutional referendum that could remove Azerbaijani references in the preamble, an obstacle to the current peace framework.

Russia’s Kremlin, which has sought to undermine the election through disinformation and economic pressure, views the outcome as a rebuke of its influence in the South Caucasus. Despite Moscow’s attempts, Pashinyan’s administration is expected to keep advancing the peace agenda, though challenges remain.
